Stay Fit Through Football
Date Posted: October 21, 2015
It’s football season! Not only is football one of my favorite sports to watch but I love everything else that comes along with it- the tailgates, parties, and most of all the snacks! Football Sundays are perfect for cheering on your favorite team and indulging in delicious food and drinks with loved ones. Do you participate in weekly football celebrations? If so, check out some tailgate tips and healthy swaps of football game favorites to get through this season looking like the wide receivers the whole way through!
Beat Over- Snacking
Make sure not to attend the event completely starving. Showing up completely ravenous will cause you to binge out and even picking foods you typically would not choose. Have your typical meals prior to the event so you arrive feeling good. When you are ready to eat, fill up on the nutrient dense snacks first such as veggies and salad. Appetizers such as pita chips with salsa, guacamole, or hummus are also great to check out.
Half Time Stretch
Yes, you are there to sit and watch a football game but you don’t necessarily need to be sitting the entire time. During halftime get up and moving. Go for a quick walk with a friend or play your game of football with the other guests. It is also important to get your regular workout in before the game. Keeping your routine will set your tone for the day, influencing you to make healthy choices.
Chips and Dip-Avoid the excessive salt, cream, and grease by making your own chips and dip! Bake 100 percent whole wheat tortillas in the oven until crisp. Cut up and serve with salsa.
Wings-Bake instead of frying them. Go skinless. Dress in your hot sauce of choice. Serve with celery and a greek yogurt blue cheese dressing instead of the traditional.
Chili- Use ground turkey instead of beef- it contains nearly half the amount of fat and tastes just as delicious!
Alcohol- Stick to light beer. If you are hosting and really want to explore, there are several gluten free and low cal beers available now.
Dessert- Serve some fruit! Whether you present it on a try or with skewers there are many ways to serve this healthy snack in a creative and appealing way.
